Tummy Tuck / Abdominoplasty

Each one of our bodies is uniquely shaped. People form a pattern of diet and exercise, either to lose weight, gain weight, or simply to stay fit. While some of our bodies are versatile, others still struggle with rigid ones. We mostly work for the bodies that we desire for but in some cases, the results might not satisfy what we strive for.

What is Tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck is a cosmetic surgical procedure to enhance the appearance of the abdomen. It removes excess skin and fat, resulting in a flatter and much stronger lower abdomen plus tightening of the existing weakened skin. Connective tissues in the abdomen (fascia) and muscles are tightened with sutures as well.

Who can get it done?

Those who have abdominal flab or excessive fat in their abdomen which is reluctant towards exercise and diet may consider Abdominoplasty , also called ‘tummy tuck’ in simple terms. People who develop abdominal fat that protrudes, get loose, or start sagging get a tummy tuck surgery done. A tummy tuck can also be done along with other body contouring surgery such as breast reduction. It eventually results in improved and strong body structure and boosts your confidence. There might be excess fat, poor elasticity of the skin, or weakened connective tissue in your abdomen, because of which you might choose to have this surgery. The other reasons include:

  • Significant changes in weight
  • Pregnancy
  • Abdominal surgery, such as a C-section
  • Aging
  • Your natural body type
Candidates

Procedure:

The whole duration of the surgery takes from one to three hours. You might have to stay overnight at the hospital, depending upon your case.

Step 1: Anesthesia

The doctor recommends the best suitable medication for you, either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. It is usually given by keeping your comfort in mind.

Step 2: The incision

The shape and length of the incision are decided as per the amount of excess skin. The first incision helps to lift the skin and once it’s done, the underlying weakened abdominal muscles are repaired. The second incision is necessary to remove the excess skin and is done around the navel. The upper abdominal skin is then pulled down, and the excess skin is excised off after tailoring it well. A new opening for the belly button (umbilicus) is then made using careful and meticulous procedures. The belly button is then popped out from under the surface of the skin and sutured into its new and proper position.

Step 3: Closing the incision

Sutures in layers, skin adhesives, tapes, and/or clips are used to close the skin incisions.

Results

People are made to stand a walk a bit from the same evening but it may take a few days (3 to 4) for you to be able to stand totally upright due to the swelling and fresh scars. After 2 weeks, you will start discovering the great results of your tummy tuck surgery when the wounds have healed well and you will have an abdomen that is flatter, stronger and slimmer. The incision scar heals well but may take a few months to get faded as and how you start massaging it well and taking good care of it. You will have to take special care of the wound after the surgery. It’s important to avoid excessive force, swelling, tight clothes, and/ or heavy exercise during the time of initial healing (first 4 to 6 weeks).
