Breast Augmentation- Your Ultimate Solution For the Breasts you desire!

Breast Augmentation/ Augmentation Mammoplasty/Breast implant surgery is a surgical procesure that aims to increase the size, shape, and fullness of breast along with contouring. This procedure also blesses you with the perfect breast volume that may have been lost after pregnancy or weight reduction, improved breast size asymmetry, and rounded breast shape. Breast implants are placed to restore a natural-appearing breast, correcting the congenital defects and deformities of the chest wall if there are any.

Before the surgery, the surgeon assists the patient to choose the size of the implant needed. This can be done by placing different sized implants into a bra to see how they feel and how it works. Generally (latest), there are 2 types of breast implants based on their filler material: Saline implant or a Silicone gel implant. The saline implant has an elastomer silicone shell filled with a sterile saline solution. The Silicone implant has pre-filled with Silicone gel in a Silicone elastomer. In surgical practice, a tissue expander device maybe used to form and establish an implant pocket for the reconstruction of the breast and future permanent breast implants.

Procedure

The patient is first given intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, administered for comfort during surgery. Now, incisions are made in unnoticeable areas to minimize visible scarring. There are four types of incisions: Periareolar(along the areolar edge), Inframammary(natural crease under the breast), Transaxillary(made to the axilla, armpit) and Transumbilical( at the umbilicus, navel). The patient and Plastic Surgeon decides where the incision would be appropriate as per the type of breast implant, degree of enlargement desired, and anatomy. In the most common technique, an incision is made underneath the breast, in the natural skin fold.
After the incision is made the surgeon will separate your breast tissue from the connective tissue of your chest and the muscles. This creates a pocket and a breast implant is inserted into a pocket either under the pectoral muscle (Submuscular placement) or over the pectoral muscle, directly behind the breast tissue (Submammary or Subglandular placement) or in an Subfascial plane. It is decided on the basis of your body type and implants. An implant is nothing but a sac filled with either sterile salt water or Silicone.
These incisions are then closed with layered sutures in the breast tissue with skin adhesive or surgical tape. At first the incision lines would be visible but as time passes by, the incision lines would fade away.

Precautionary Measures:

While you are healing, it is advisable to wear a compression garment or sports bra for extra support and positioning of your breast and implants. Follow your surgeon’s guidelines on switching back to regular activities. If you don’t have a physical, nerve-wracking job, you might be able to pace up with a regular work routine within a few days. Save yourself from strenuous activities for about 4 to 6 weeks. While you are getting adjusted to breast transformation, your breasts might be sensitive to jarring movements or any physical contact.

Advantages:

  • It helps to enhance your appearance if you find your breasts too small.
  • Asymmetry: Our left and right breast do not have the same shape. So, this can help you attain the similar shape of breasts.
  • It helps in lifting and increasing the size of your breast after pregnancy.
  • Improves your self-confidence.

Disadvantages:

  • Implant leakage or rupture (extremely rare).
Capsular contracture- scar tissue that distorts the shape of a breast implant by compressing the implant and converting breast tissue into a hard and unnatural shape (various measures are taken to prevent this).
  • Though very low, it can cause a rare immune system cancer called Anaplastic large cell lymphoma(ALCL) that’s associated with textured breast implants. (not seen in India as yet)!
