Cataract

A part of the ageing process, a cataract occurs when there is a protein buildup that makes the eye lens cloudy. This results in loss of the vision as clear light passage are prevented. This cloudiness in the eye increases as the cataract advance until it is treated correctly.

More on Cataract:

  • Most common cause of vision loss among the people above the age of 50 years.

  • The cloudiness amount and pattern within the lens vary from person to person

  • Cataract can also develop in infants.

Symptoms: :

Cataracts form slowly and show few symptoms until they start blocking light noticeably. These symptoms vary from person to person. Common symptoms include:
  • Cloudy, Blurry, and Foggy vision.

  • Change in the way one can see colours as a discoloured lens may act as a filter

  • Issues in night driving due to the glare from oncoming headlights

  • Double Vision

Cataract Procedure

  • One should opt for the cataract procedure when it advances to a level that interferes with the daily activities

  • Cataract is a highly successful procedure with a success rate of 95-98%

  • A detailed eye check-up is conducted to check the type of cataract, eye pressures, retina etc. to rule out any other eye problems

  • A power scan is conducted to determine what power of lens should be implanted post the procedure.

  • There are various type of cataract surgery:

  • Phacoemulsification or Phaco Surgery
  • It is a day care procedure and hospital admission is not required

  • A small incision is made on the side of the cornea

  • A tiny probe is inserted in to the eye

  • The device emits ultrasound waves to soften and break the eye lens to remove it via suction

  • It is suture-less procedure

  • The procedure is done under local anesthesia using local anesthetic drops or injections

  • SICS Procedure
  • Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery or SICS is a low cost procedure

  • A small incision is made to remove cataract and implant the lens (IOL)

  • Both the procedure is done under local anesthesia using local anesthetic drops or injections

Types of Intraocular lens (IOL)

  • Aspheric foldable IOL – aspheric design of IOL gives better contrast of the picture, reduces glare, better vision at night time

  • Yellow aspheric IOL protects from UV rays of sunlight

  • Multifocal IOL- natural crystalline lens has accommodation capacity which can focus at far, intermediate and near distance with the help of intraocular muscles.

  • In multifocal IOLs, they have refractive-defractive design [rings] which helps in focusing far, intermediate and near objects. So, patient become “glass-free” for remaining life.

  • It is so precise that it eliminates all the power of glasses patient wearing before surgery

  • TORIC IOL – some of the patients have pre-existing astigmatism [ cylindrical power ]. It can be removed by TORIC lens implantation during surgery. So,patient becomes spectacles free and don’t need to wear glasses. Quality of vision also gets improved.

Post-Porcedure Care

  • Several eye-drops will be prescribed for a few weeks

  • No pain or discomfort is generally experienced by the patients

  • Patients can resume the normal activities from the following day itself including driving, working on computers, and watching T.V.
