Gynecomastia is a rise in the amount of breast gland tissue in boys or adults, caused by an estrogen and testosterone imbalance of the hormones. It may affect one or both breasts, sometimes unevenly. Newborns, boys going through puberty and older men may develop gynecomastia as a result of natural changes in hormone levels, although there are other causes as well.

Testosterone and estrogen hormones control the sex characteristics of both men and women. Testosterone regulates the features of males, such as muscle mass and body hair. Estrogen regulates the female characteristics including breast development. Even though breasts do not grow in men as they do in women, all boys are born with a small amount of tissue in the breast. Boys’ bodies make mostly a hormone called testosterone, which during puberty guides their sexual growth. But males do produce some estrogen — the hormone that steers girls’ sexual development.

The balance of the two hormones changes when a boy goes through puberty, or when an older man’s body makes less testosterone. Sometimes a higher percentage of estrogen will cause male breast tissue to swell when this occurs. Around half of teenage boys and as many as two-thirds of men over 50 will have this to some extent.

In these cases, the areola’s position and size can be improved surgically, and excess skin can be reduced. The plastic surgery to correct gynecomastia is called mammoplasty reduction. Treating Gynecomastia With Liposuction Technique

In cases where gynecomastia is the product of excess fatty tissue, liposuction techniques can prove to be effective. The liposuction technique includes usage of a cannula and a thin hollow tube to be inserted through several small incisions. The cannula is passed back and forth in a guided movement to release the excess fat which is then removed by vacuum suction from the body. Different liposuction techniques can be used; the most suitable technique in your case will be discussed prior to your procedure.
